2017 HIGH SCHOOL RANKING IS OUT. CHECK OUT WHO MADE THE TOP 20.

The 2017 West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results have been compiled. Based on the results, we have computed the pass rates of the top performing schools in the past five years (from 2013 -2017). The ranking methodology employs the percentage of candidates who scored A1 to C6 in six subjects and qualified for tertiary education.

This year’s list saw very few changes. Overall, Brong-Ahafo based Saint James Seminary topped with an average pass rate of 98.80%. The school has consistently scored above 97% in the past five years (posting 99.49% in 2014 , 98.69% in 2015 and 97.75% in 2017)

Most Senior High Schools making the top 10 remain intact but for Rev. John Teye Memorial School who secured a 80% pass rate this year to clinch tenth place. It is the only private school to make the top 10 this year. Galaxy International School is the next best private school in Ghana clinching 16th place with an average pass rate of 77.46%

Wesely Girls High School still leads the pack of top all girls schools, closely followed by Holy Child College.  In 2017, Holico had a pass rate of 90.69% to Wesely Girls’ 86.86%. At this rate, Holy Child College will surpass Wesely Girls High School as the best girls’ school in the next few years. Saint Roses SHS, St. Louis SHS and Aburi Girls are the remaining all girls schools in the top 20 list.

  1. ST. JAMES SEMINARY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

              Average percentage of passes: 98.80%

St. James Seminary Senior High Schools comes out on top again this year. This little known school located in the Brong-Ahafo Region have been able to maintain top spot over the past five years. They topped last year’s list with a whooping 98.80% of average passes over the past five years. In 2017 Out of 267 students presented, 261 were eligible for University Education.

 

  1.  ST. FRANCIS XAVIER JUNIOR SEMINARY

         Average percentage of passes: 94.97%

St. James Senior High is followed closely by St. Francis Xavier Junior Seminary from the Upper West Region of Ghana. In recent times this school has garnered praise for their academic prowess. They have also placed consistently in the top five schools for the last few years. They came up an average pass rate of 94.97%. In the last academic year,out of the 77 students presented 75 were eligible for University Education.

 

  1. OPOKU WARE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

             Average percentage of passes: 88.23%

The third spot is taken by Opoku Ware Senior High School popularly known as ‘’OWASS’’. l Located in Fankyenebra, near Santasi in the Ashanti Region, the school leads the Ashanti Region cohort of top schools. In 2017, out of 866 students presented, 739 qualified for University education. That have scored an impressive 85.33% of average passes over the past five years.

 

  1. WESLEY GIRLS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

       Average percentage of passes: 87.60%

The ‘’almighWey Gey Hey’’ make it to the fourth on the list. Often regarded as the best school in the country, the all-girls school from Cape Coast have consistently made it to the top five schools over the past decade. Aside being an academic power house, they are known for their stellar discipline. Out of 428 students presented in 2017, 371 were eligible for university education. This represents a commendable 88.23% average pass rate over the past five years.

 

  1. HOLY CHILD SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

     Average percentage of passes: 87.53%

Another all-girl school from Cape Coast follows closely in fifth place. In 2017,  Holy Child Senior High School presented 419 students out of which 380 qualified for admission into the university in 2017. They also came up fifth in the year 2016. With an average pass of 87.53% over the past five years, they are the second-best ranked girls’ school in the country.

 

  1. ADISADEL COLLEGE

Average percentage of passes: 86.31%

The famous ’zebra boys’ came sixth on the list with an average percentage pass of 86.31 over the past five years. Out of 809 students presented in 2017, 674 qualified for admission to the University. Consistently ranked among the best Senior High Schools, it is worth mentioning that Adisadel College was ranked 10th out of the top 100 best high schools in Africa by Africa Almanac in 2003, based on quality of education, student engagement, strength and activities of alumni, school profile, internet and news visibility.

 

  1. ST. PETER’S SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Average percentage of passes: 84.81%

Popularly referred to as ‘’PERSCO’’, St. Peter’s SHS comes in 7th overall with an average pass of 84.81% over the past five years. Located in the town of Nkwatia Kwahu on the Kwahu Ridge and arguably the best school in the Eastern Region, they had 375 students qualifying for University Education out of the 452 in the year 2017.

 

  1. ST. AUGUSTINE’S COLLEGE

Average percentage of passes: 83.06%

Another top school from the Central Region of Ghana, the boys in green placed 8th in the recent ranking with an average percent passes of 83.06 over the past five years. Out of 666 students registered, 566 qualified for admission into the tertiary level in 2017.

 

  1. REV. JOHN TEYE MEMORIAL INSTITUTE

Average percentage of passes: 81.96%

The only Private School among the top ten, Rev. John Teye Memorial Institute comes in a respectable ninth with 40 students having qualified for the university education out of the 50 registered .The school, which is located in Ofankor came up with an average percentage pass of 81.96 over the past five years..

 

  1. NOTRE DAME SEMINARY SNR. HIGH SCHOOL

Average percentage of passes: 81.64%

Located in the Upper East Region of Ghana, Notre Dame SHS has greatly improved over the last few years. They make the top ten list with an of average pass percentage of 81.64% over the past five years. Out of 136 students registered in 2017, 126 qualified for placement in a university.

 

  1. ST. ROSES SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Average percentage of passes: 81.59%

St. Roses Senior High School is undoubtedly  one of the best girsl schools in the country. Located  in Akwatia in the Eastern Region of Ghana, they have consistently ranked among the top 20 schools in the country. They came up 11th in 2017 and 2nd from the Eastern Region with a total of 375 students being qualified for university admission out of 375.Their average percent of passes over the past 5 years is 81. 59

 

  1. LOUIS SNR. HIGH SCHOOL

 Average percentage of passes: 81.25%

St. Louis Senior High School is a popular catholic girls school located in the Ashanti Region. They came in 12th in the 2017 ranking with an average percentage pass of 81.25 over the last 5 years. In 2017, out of 753 students who were registered, 573 were eligible for university studies.

 

  1. SAVIOUR SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

  Average percentage of passes: 80.79%

The little known Saviour Senior High School based in the Eastern Region make it in the top 20 list with an average percentage pass of 80.79%  over the last 5 years.In 2017,out of 143 students who registered, an impressive 111 qualified for university selection.

 

  1. MFANTSIPIM SCHOOL

  Average percentage of passes: 79.03%

Regarded as the first school to be established in the country, the “Kwabotwe” lads  place in the top 20 schools yet again with an average percentage pass of 79.03 over the last five years . In 2017, the lads in red and black had 844 students qualifying for university out of 1058 students registered.

 

  1. PRESEC LEGON BOYS’ SNR. HIGH SCHOOL

                Average percentage of passes: 78.08%

Prominent for their prowess in Science, the Legon based school came in 15th place with an average of  78.08%  of passes over the last 5 year period.743 students meet the criteria for university placement out of 925 registered in 2017.

 

  1. GALAXY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

               Average percentage of passes: 77.46%

Only the second Private school to make it to the top 20, Galaxy international School comes in a respectable 16th. Out of 12 candidates registered, 10 qualified for admission into the university in 2017. They had an average percentage pass of 77.46 in the last five years.

 

  1. PREMPEH COLLEGE

             Average percentage of passes: 76.63%

Prempeh college in the Ashanti Region came in 17th position with an average percentage pass of 76.63 in the last five years .579 students out of the 822 registered were eligible for university selection in 2017.

 

  1. BEREKUM STAR SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

           Aciverage percentage of passes: 75.94%

A relatively unknown school, Berekum Star Senior High School has steadily risen up the ranks. They placed 18th with average pass percentage of 75.94. In 2017, 366 students out of 379 who registered qualified for admission into the university.

 

  1. POPE JOHN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

         Average percentage of passes: 75.83%

One of the top schools in the Eastern Region, the boys in yellow and blue placed 19th with an average percentage pass of 75.83 over the last five years. Out of 475 students registered in 2017, 369 qualified for university placement in the year.

 

  1. ABURI GIRLS’ SNR. HIGH SCHOOL

      Average percentage of passes: 74.46%

Aburi Girls SHS conclude our top 20 list with an average percentage pass of 74.46 over the last 5 year period. The school on the Hill has consistently ranked among the best girls schools in the country. In 2017, 620 students were registered out of which 499 qualified for university placement.
